What car shipping actually costs — and what moves it
There is no honest single number for shipping a car. The same vehicle on the same route can be quoted differently in March and October, and a website that shows you an instant price is showing you a guess dressed up as a quote. What we can do is explain exactly which variables move the number, so the quote you get from a provider makes sense.
The variables
Eight things that move a quote, roughly in order
Providers price against these, not against a table of averages. If you know where your shipment sits on each one, you can tell whether a quote is reasonable.
Distance — and, more importantly, the route
Large effectLonger trips cost more in total but less per mile. What matters more than raw distance is whether the route follows a busy corridor. A thousand miles along I-10 between two major metros is an easier, cheaper shipment than four hundred miles between two towns nobody is driving through.
Vehicle size, weight and clearance
Large effectDeck space and weight allowance are what a carrier is actually selling. A compact sedan uses less of both than a three-row SUV or a lifted pickup, so it prices lower on the identical route. Unusually low, wide or tall vehicles cost more again because fewer trailers can physically take them.
Whether the car runs
Large effectAn inoperable vehicle needs a winch, more time on the ground and a provider equipped for it. If the car does not roll, steer and brake, it needs specialised equipment and the price changes substantially. This is also the factor people most often get wrong on a request form.
Season and direction of travel
Large effectLanes swing hard with demand. Southbound to Florida in October and northbound in April are the expensive directions; the same route at the opposite point in the season is materially easier. Summer concentrates household moves nationwide and firms prices across most corridors.
Open or enclosed
Large effectEnclosed transport is consistently and substantially more expensive than open. Fewer trailers exist, each carries fewer cars, and the cost is spread across a smaller load. It is the right answer for some vehicles and unnecessary for most.
How flexible your dates are
Moderate effectA wide first-available window is easy for a driver to fit into an existing load. A hard date is not, and it prices accordingly. Where you genuinely have flexibility, saying so is one of the few levers entirely under your control.
How far each end is from the interstate
Moderate effectA pickup twenty minutes off a main corridor is barely a detour. One that takes a driver two hours out and two hours back is four hours of unpaid running, and it shows up in the quote — on both ends of the trip.
Fuel and operating costs
Situational effectDiesel prices move the whole market at once. When fuel climbs, quotes across every lane follow within weeks. This is the factor nobody controls, and it is a good reason not to treat a price you were quoted last season as a benchmark for this one.
Timing trade-offs
Four things worth knowing before you compare quotes
These are the places where the cheapest-looking option and the best option are not the same thing.
Speed costs more than almost anything else
A guaranteed or expedited pickup means a provider has to reshuffle a route around your vehicle. If your date can move by even a few days, you are usually better off saying so than paying for the certainty. The exception is auction storage — when fees accrue daily, do the arithmetic before assuming patience is cheaper.
Door-to-door is really "as close as the truck can get"
Nearly every provider advertises door-to-door service, and nearly every provider means it. But a full-size carrier cannot enter many residential streets, gated communities or low-clearance garages. Meeting at a nearby lot is normal and does not usually change the price. Treat a promise of literal doorstep loading with some scepticism.
The lowest quote is not always the real price
A quote that is far below the others on the same route is worth a question, not a celebration. Ask what happens if no driver accepts the load at that price, whether the amount can change after booking, and what the cancellation terms are. A price that cannot get the car moved is not a saving.
Insurance limits vary, and they are not a formality
Cargo coverage is set by each provider, not by the trailer type. Ask for the certificate of insurance, the cargo limit and the deductible — and if the vehicle is worth more than the limit, that is a real gap, not a paperwork detail.
Methodology
Why there is no price calculator on this page

Here’s what usually affects the price. I’d rather explain that than invent a number.
Plenty of car-shipping sites will hand you an instant number. Those numbers are generated from a formula, not from a provider who has looked at your shipment, and they are frequently well below what the vehicle actually moves for. The number gets you to submit a form; the real conversation happens afterwards.
We would rather be useful than fast here. When we publish cost ranges, they will come from quotes providers actually gave on real shipments, stamped with the date they were collected and the number of quotes behind them — so you can see how current they are and judge them for yourself.
Until there are enough of those to publish honestly, this page explains the variables instead. That is genuinely more useful for judging whether a quote you have been given is reasonable.
The fastest honest answer is a provider
Describe the shipment properly and a provider who serves your route can tell you what it costs — for your vehicle, your dates and your corridor.

Cost questions we hear most
How much does it cost to ship a car?
There is no single figure that is honest. Price depends on distance and corridor density, vehicle size, whether the car runs, the season and direction of travel, open versus enclosed, and how flexible your dates are. A provider looking at your specific shipment is the only source of a real number.
Why is there no instant price calculator?
Because an instant price is generated by a formula, not by a provider who has seen your shipment. Those numbers are frequently well below what the vehicle actually moves for, and their purpose is to get a form submitted. We would rather explain the variables and let a provider quote honestly.
Is a deposit normal?
Deposit practices vary between providers. Ask what the deposit covers, whether it is refundable, and what happens if no driver accepts the load. Car Shipping Miami does not take payment for shipments at any point.
Can the price change after I book?
It can, with some providers and under some conditions — most often when the vehicle turns out to be different from how it was described. Ask directly whether the quoted amount is fixed, and describe the vehicle accurately so the question does not arise.
What is the cheapest way to ship a car?
Open transport, on a busy corridor, with flexible dates, outside the seasonal peak, with both ends near an interstate, and with an accurate description of a running vehicle. Each of those pulls in the same direction.
